A little bit of history into Great Yarmouth

Reading Books in Library

As well as being East Anglia's premier beach resort, Great Yarmouth also has a fabulous maritime heritage and a port famous for once being the hub of the herring industry. Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile is a paradise for people who enjoy seaside entertainment at it's best.

There's a reason that there is a Great in front of Yarmouth. Yes, it's because it was called Magna (Great) in 1272 during the reign of Edward I, to distinguish it from Little Yarmouth, now known as Southtown across the river Yare. However, we think you will agree that it's probably because it really is Great.

In 1101 the Church of St Nicholas was founded by Herbert de Losinga, the first Bishop of Norwich, and consecrated in 1119. This was to be the first of several priories founded in what was a wealthy trading centre of considerable importance. In 1208, King John granted a charter to Great Yarmouth.
